Ok, so it’s widely known that during the winter months wine consumption tends to decline. Avid drinkers of white wine varieties just seem to disappear as the weather cools. It’s rather unfortunate that sauvignon blanc doesn’t complement our hearty winter meals (who knew?).

Luckily, we have a vast gamut of red wine varieties available to us, which prove to be more than adequate substitutes.

This winter we’ve been getting very excited about Pinot Noir. It’s such a versatile variety as it can certainly please many a palate. They can range from light fruity styles that provide bright red cherries to more savoury styles that display forest floor and spice.

There is little doubt that Mornington Peninsula is one of Australia’s premier Pinot producing regions. Funnily enough, it is due to its cool dry winters that enable this grape variety to flourish. So it hardly seems fair to curse the winter weather when it results in such sublime Pinot that we all can enjoy, especially when it is produced right on our doorstep.

The Point Leo Road Pinot Noir is a complex example with highly focussed fruits, namely black cherry with a touch of plum. Being such a complex wine it has great ageing potential and at $29, is a great investment.

The Manna Gum winery produces a bright, fruit driven pinot noir. Slow ripening and late picking result in faint cherry sweetness, while French oak provides a complex savoury backbone. At $17 the Manna Gum is one for the bargain hunters.
