Trophy – Best Grenache - James Halliday Grenache Challenge 2023
Trophy – Best Grenache - McLaren Vale Wine Show 2023

Serafino Wines’ 2022 Reserve Grenache has won the James Halliday Grenache Challenge for 2023. From 153 entries submitted from across Australia, the 2022 Serafino Wines’ Reserve Grenache was selected as the Best Grenache by an impressive panel of judges including James Halliday himself.

This win comes on the back of the Serafino 2022 Reserve Grenache receiving awards for Best Grenache and Best One Year Old Grenache at the 2023 McLaren Vale Wine Show.

This is a medium bodied Grenache with a long even bright palate. This brightness is super silky with spice, violets and plums. A fruit forward style with beautiful complexity.

Steve Maglieri's Serafino is a Mclaren Vale icon with a pedigree 2nd to none.  Steve has been crowned ‘Bushing King for a record 3 times, for best red wine in the McLaren Vale Wine Show in 1979, 1992 and 2007. Numerous awards have followed including the Trophy for Best Shiraz and Red Wine of the Year at the London International Wine Challenge earning the Trophy for the most consistent Shiraz at the London International Wine Challenge after winning Gold in its class for five consecutive years.

Where this wine comes from - McLaren Vale

Just south of Adelaide in South Australia, McLaren Vale is a red wine drinker’s haven, producing rich, velvety textured reds the state is known for. Looking over St Vincent Gulf, the maritime influence in McLaren Vale helps to keep summer temperatures down while the steady temperatures are perfect for producing balanced reds that are certainly easy on the palate. In a similar vein to the Barossa, McLaren Vale hangs its hat on Shiraz, but similarly, Grenache and Mourvèdre play a strong supporting role – perhaps outshining the star of the show on occasion! Certainly its GSM blends deserve recognition, producing seamless wines. Enjoying its Mediterranean climate, it comes as no surprise that the wines of McLaren Vale are perfect with hearty Italian dishes – ragout, pizza, or an antipasto platter – you can’t go wrong.
